This hairpin is crafted in the Mammen style, an artistic tradition of the late 10th century named after the richly decorated grave at Mammen, Denmark. The style is defined by intricate animal ornament, flowing lines, and detailed interlace, bridging the earlier Jelling style with more elaborate late Viking Age forms. Here, the motif takes the shape of ravens, carved with attention to the elegance and movement characteristic of Mammen art.

The raven was one of the most important symbols in Germanic and Norse culture. Associated with Odin through his companion birds Huginn and Muninn, ravens stood for intelligence, memory, and foresight. They were also battle-omens, circling the field as carrion birds, and their image appeared on the Raven banner borne by Norse chieftains, a sign of both divine favor and martial destiny.
