He sacrificed an eye, and hung himself from a branch of Yggdrasil, the Cosmic Tree, as a sacrifice to himself. He hung there for nine days, and denied all the other Aesir gods who visited him urging to have the rope cut. On the final day, the Norns etched the runes into the bark of the tree, and Odin was taught their magic and power.
