Borre Art Pagan Loki Necklace Amulet
This pendant is based on a piece from the Vårby hoard, a Viking‑Age find from Sweden. The design follows the open‑work style typical of the Borre period, showing a gripping beast motif surrounded by a circular frame. Four small animal heads form the outer points of the pendant, a feature common in Scandinavian metalwork of the 9th–10th centuries.
The central figure is often described as a “gripping beast,” a recurring design in Viking art symbolising strength and protection. Some interpretations suggest it may depict Loki bound to three rocks by the entrails of his son, a punishment described in Norse mythology after his role in Baldr’s death. This reading connects the pendant to mythic themes of restraint and consequence within the Norse pantheon.
