He was charged with the protection of all of Asgard and was the only being powerful enough to slay the terrifying Serpent of Midgard, Loki’s world-encompassing son Jörmungandr. However, he was also cursed to die shortly after defeating Jörmungandr as he would succumb to its venom.
Thor’s exploits are legendary. He is known for his relentless slaughter of his foes and fierce battles with the monstrous serpent Jörmungandr. His courage and sense of duty are unshakeable, and his physical strength is virtually unmatched. He even owns a belt of strength named Megingjörð – this belt is said to double his already formidable strength – and a pair of gloves named Járngreipr, translating to ‘iron grippers’, which aid him in carrying his hammer with little to no effort after majority of its handle had been damaged during its forging (thanks Loki).
Vidarr: The Silent Avenger
Vidarr, the Norse god of vengeance, is the son of Odin and the giantess Gridr. In Norse mythology, Vidarr is fated to be one of the few surviving gods to remain after Ragnarok. He is destined to avenge his father’s death by slaying the fierce wolf Fenrir and ultimately help rebuild Yggdrasil and all the realms it holds within its roots and branches. Vidarr is known as the “silent god” and is said to be the strongest of the gods after Thor.
Odin: The All Father
The Allfather Odin, or Óðinn, is the god with the greatest mental capacity. His dominions include wisdom, healing, knowledge, death, executions, war, poetry, frenzy, and runes. He always sought new information and power and ruled over Valhalla, where many of the dead went. Odin played a part in the creation of the world, slaying the terrible Ymir and breathing life into the first two humans, Ask and Embla. He was a master of disguise, appearing throughout Norse and other Germanic texts under many pseudonyms and remaining unrecognized by the gods. Odin is also a war god and has been since his earliest mentions. As a war god, Odin is the god of battle and death and is described as traveling through many realms or worlds, winning every battle.

Despite Thor’s physical strength, Odin’s wisdom, knowledge, and magical abilities make him a formidable opponent. In the poem “The Lay of Greybeard,” Odin, disguised as Harbard, engages in a verbal duel with Thor, demonstrating his superior wit and knowledge. Even then, Odin’s spear Gungnir possesses an unmatched variety of enchantments.
Vidarr, on the other hand, demonstrates his strength in the act of vengeance. He avenges his father’s death by successfully slaying Fenrir, one of the most fearsome creatures in Norse mythology. This act of vengeance not only showcases Vidarr’s physical strength but also his resilience and determination.
While Thor, Odin, and Vidarr are all incredibly powerful, they represent different types of strength. Thor is the embodiment of physical power, capable of feats of strength that no other god can match. On the other hand, Odin represents mental strength, with his wisdom and knowledge surpassing all others. Vidarr represents the strength of resilience and vengeance, showcasing his power through his actions during Ragnarok.

If we consider the strength of resilience and vengeance, then Vidarr stands out – and, to point out the obvious, Vidar is the only survivor out of the trio after Ragnarok has at last come to an end.
